Pursuing the Sunshine: An Eco-feminist Interpretation of A Thousand Splendid Suns
A Thousand Splendid Suns, written by the Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini (1965—), is the second work which comes after his maiden novel The Kite Runner. The great success of this novel attached significant influence to the world.? A Thousand Splendid Suns is a story about two Afghan women. The novel shows the difficult situation of women in the patriarchal society. At the same time, the novel also shows the great destruction of Afghanistan’s natural environment caused by successive wars and unstable situations.
This thesis will analyze the novel from the perspective of eco-feminism. Eco-feminism appeared in the 1970s. It was originated from feminism and it is one of feminism branches. Eco-feminism, which combines ecology and the idea of feminism, opposes anthropocentrism and androcentrism and criticizes the values of patriarchy.? The thesis tries to analyze the novel by eco-feminism. The thesis reveals the oppression of women and nature in the patriarchal society and the great damage that the war has brought to the nature, and it also indicates the importance of building a harmonious society.
